Same Day Dentures

same day dentures long island

Tooth loss has a major impact on your life. Not only is your appearance affected, making you self-conscious, but many of your normal daily activities are also impacted as well. Dentures have been used for decades to restore missing teeth, and are still a popular option today. However, in many instances, it can take weeks before you see your final dentures. At National Dental East Meadow, we have eliminated that wait thanks to on-site technology with same day dentures.

Dentures have been used for hundreds of years. Today’s dentures, however, are vastly different from their earliest predecessors. Even changes within the past few decades have seen dentures become more comfortable and more natural looking, with more customized teeth, and bases that are made to match the color of your gums.

Dentures are a removable prosthetic replacement for missing teeth. They can be made for patients who have sections of several consecutive missing teeth (partial dentures) or to replace an entire arch of missing teeth (full, or complete, dentures). They consist of acrylic resin teeth that are set into a hard, acrylic base, which is supported by your gums, and held in place by suction. Partial dentures have added extra support with metal clasps that attach to your healthy teeth. When in place, you can eat and speak normally, your face is filled out (taking years off of your appearance), and your smile is restored.

In the past, dentures have been made from molds of your mouth that were taken with an impression putty. These impressions were taken after any extractions of unhealthy teeth. They were then sent off to a separate lab, where your dentures were created. This could leave you without teeth for several weeks!

Without your teeth, your jawbone slowly begins to weaken or resorb. Over time, it begins to change shape. Dentures are made from molds of your mouth. If you have to wait several weeks for your final dentures to be made, your jawbone is likely to change shape, even if it is only slightly, during this time. This means that, when your dentures are finished, they will not fit properly. Adjustments will have to be made, lengthening the time you are without your final restorations.

Same day dentures eliminate the wait for your final restorations. Also known as instant or immediate dentures, same day dentures are made before your tooth extractions so that they are ready and waiting for you as soon as your extractions are completed. Same day dentures can be used for partial dentures as well as full dentures. The base is lined with a tissue conditioner, which provides a cushion between the hard acrylic material and your sensitive gum tissue. The dentures are placed right away after your teeth have been removed. They act similarly to a bandage, helping to seal your extraction sites away from harmful bacteria, and preventing infections. As your gums begin to heal, and your mouth adjusts to your missing teeth, and your new dentures, the dentures are relined. This process of relining may occur several times. After you have healed, the liners are removed, and you can wear your dentures with just the acrylic base.

At National Dental, we have the technology to create your same day dentures right in our office. Creating your dentures is done with CAD/CAM technology, which stands for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing. The process starts with a “mold” of your mouth. Instead of impression putty, we use a digital intraoral scanner, which generates a 3-dimensional scan on our computer monitor. We then use specialized software (the CAD portion of the technology) that allows us to design a denture that will fit perfectly in your mouth. We can customize your teeth, and the coloration, allowing your new dentures to look like your natural teeth. If you are only getting partial dentures, this helps your new dentures to blend in more seamlessly with the rest of your smile.

Once the dentures have been designed, the information is then sent to our in-office milling machine (CAM technology). The machine goes to work fabricating your dentures. Having the technology available right in our office is a major advantage. There is no more waiting for your impressions to be sent off to an off-site lab to be created and then sent back.

There are numerous benefits to same day dentures. One of the biggest advantages is that the wait for your final dentures is eliminated. There is no need to deal with temporary dentures, which only provide some functions of your teeth while you wait for your final dentures. You are supplied with your fully functional, final dentures the very same day your teeth are extracted. Other benefits of same day dentures include:

  • Less bone resorption. Tooth loss results in bone resorption. While you are waiting for your final dentures, your jawbone may experience so much bone resorption that by the time your dentures are ready, they may no longer fit, which would then require more waiting while adjustments are being made. Since same day dentures are ready right away, they will fit as they are supposed to.
  • Same day dentures help your gums to heal faster. The dentures act as a bandage, helping clots to form, and protecting the extraction sites from bacteria.

There are some disadvantages with same day dentures. These disadvantages are similar to those of traditional dentures. They require a substantial amount of care, needing to be removed each night for cleaning. After they are cleaned (with either denture paste or soap and water), they need to be soaked overnight in a denture cleaning solution. Dentures may slip out of place on occasion. Moreover, because dentures cannot stop bone loss, your jawbone will continue to resorb while you wear them. This resorption means that eventually, your dentures will no longer fit, so you will need to be fit for a new set, which occurs approximately every seven years.

With same day dentures, you don’t have to go a day longer without teeth following your appointment. Contact National Dental East Meadow today at (516) 962-2292 to learn more.
