PROFESSIONAL DENTAL CLEANINGS
Taking the time to brush and floss your teeth every day is an essential habit. The ADA recommends that you brush at least twice a day, and floss daily. Brushing and flossing are only a part of the equation. Even if you adhere to these guidelines, you may still find yourself faced with oral health issues such as cavities and gum disease. At National Dental East Meadow, we offer professional cleanings to ensure that your oral health stays at its best.
WHY IS A PROFESSIONAL DENTAL CLEANING SO IMPORTANT?
Even if you diligently brush and floss every day, there are still areas of your mouth that you might miss. Continually missing these areas means that they can become safe havens for oral bacteria to collect and multiply. The bacteria produce harmful acids that can lead to tooth decay and cavities, and they can irritate the gum tissue, causing irritation and inflammation. We are trained to clean all areas of your teeth, including the areas that you may frequently miss, thus significantly reducing your risk for cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOME CARE AND A DENTAL CLEANING?
There is a big difference between at home dental care and a professional dental cleaning. At home, you are equipped with your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, and your mirror. At National Dental, we are equipped with a wide variety of specialized tools. These tools allow us to effectively clean even the most stubborn tartar and plaque from your teeth. We also have intraoral cameras, which allow us to see areas of your mouth that you may not be able to see with your regular bathroom mirror. A professional cleaning is more thorough and helps to ensure all contaminants are reduced or eliminated so that your teeth and gums can stay healthy.
HOW A CLEANING IS PERFORMED
A dental cleaning is a straightforward procedure. We start by removing plaque (a sticky substance that collects naturally on your teeth throughout the day), tartar (hardened plaque that cannot be removed by a toothbrush), bacteria and other debris from the surfaces of your teeth. We take care to clean between your teeth, and just below the gum line as well.
Once your teeth have been scraped clean, we then move on to polishing them, which is performed with the help of our electric handpieces. We use a special polish that contains abrasives to scrub your teeth clean. We then floss your teeth. Even if you floss your teeth at home, an extra flossing won’t hurt, and it will help to remove any lingering buildup that may have been left behind by our scraping or polishing. Finally, if applicable, we may apply a fluoride treatment, which will help protect your teeth from the acid attacks of oral bacteria.
BENEFITS OF A DENTAL CLEANING
The biggest benefit of a dental cleaning is that it helps you to maintain your oral health, and prevent serious issues like tooth decay and gum disease. Other benefits of a cleaning include:
- A whiter smile. By scraping your teeth and polishing them, we also remove some surface stains. This can help your smile to appear whiter.
- Fresher breath. By removing all contaminants from your mouth, your breath will be fresher.
- Improve your overall health. Regular dental cleanings help to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, which, when untreated, can promote serious health issues like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
- Save money. Since a cleaning helps to prevent oral health complications, you will save money by avoiding expensive treatments later on.
It is recommended that you get a professional cleaning at least twice a year (every six months). If it’s been a while since your last dental cleaning, call National Dental East Meadow at (516) 962-2292 to schedule your appointment today!
