DENTURES – COMPLETE & PARTIAL
Your teeth are one of the most important features of your mouth, performing several essential tasks every day – biting and chewing food, allowing you to speak, and even helping to provide shape to your face. Tooth loss can greatly affect these functions, making them exceedingly more difficult. At National Dental East Meadow, we offer complete dentures and partial dentures to help restore your missing teeth.
HOW DO YOU LOSE YOUR TEETH?
Tooth loss has many causes. One of the most common causes of tooth loss is gum disease. When oral bacteria find their way under your swollen gums, they go to work attacking your periodontal ligaments (the structures that hold your teeth in place), as well as your jawbone. Both become weak, loosening your teeth. If the teeth become weak enough, they will fall out.
Other causes of tooth loss include:
- Bruxism (grinding and clenching of your teeth).
- Oral trauma.
- Hormonal changes (such as pregnancy or menopause).
REPLACING YOUR TEETH
Dentures have been used for hundreds of years to replace missing teeth. However, today’s dentures are nothing like the ones first made. In fact, they are vastly different than they were only a few decades ago. Today’s dentures are less bulky and more natural looking than dentures of the past. They are removable prosthetic teeth that are made from molds of your mouth, designed to be supported by your gums and held in place by suction. The false teeth are set into an acrylic, gum-colored base. Dentures can replace sections of missing teeth, or they can replace an entire mouth of missing teeth.
Complete dentures (full dentures) are dentures that are used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth (whether it is the top, bottom, or both). If you have any unhealthy, unsalvageable teeth left, we will first extract them. Molds are then taken of your mouth, which are used to custom create your new teeth.
If you have sections of missing teeth, but you also have several healthy teeth remaining, there is no need to remove those teeth for full dentures. But your missing teeth do need to be replaced. Partial dentures are meant just for this purpose. They are designed in a similar fashion to full dentures. They have clasps that hook onto your healthy teeth to help hold them securely in place.
CARING FOR YOUR DENTURES
Taking care of your dentures does require some extra effort. They need to be removed every night for cleaning. Brush your dentures with a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture paste or soap and water. Rinse your dentures and place them in a denture cleaning solution to soak overnight. You should also brush your gums, any remaining teeth, and the other tissues in your mouth. Even if you are missing all of your teeth, keeping your mouth clean is essential for preventing gum disease. In the morning, brush your gums (and your teeth) again, rinse your dentures, and set them in place.
There are several benefits to dentures including:
- Restored ability to bite and chew food.
- Improved speech.
- Your lips and cheeks fill out, helping to restore a more youthful appearance.
- Restored smile and confidence.
