Dental implants are the latest option for replacing your missing teeth, whether you’ve lost one or all of them. They have quickly become one of the most popular options, providing numerous benefits over traditional replacement options such as bridges and dentures. In many instances, you don’t receive your permanent restorations until well after your implants have been placed. At National Dental East Meadow, however, your teeth can be ready the same day as your procedure.
Dental implants consist of small titanium rods, which are surgically inserted into your jawbone. As you heal, your jawbone fuses to the implants, a process known as osseointegration. This process turns the implants into sturdy “roots” that support your replacement teeth. It also helps to keep your jawbone strong, preventing bone loss that typically follows tooth loss.
Implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth. For this reason, there are several different types of implants, designed to meet your specific needs:
- Single tooth implants. One implant is inserted, which supports a single ceramic crown.
- Multiple tooth implants or an implant supported the bridge. This type of implant is used when you are missing several missing teeth in one area, providing an alternative to fixed bridges and partial dentures.
- Implant supported dentures. When you are missing an entire arch of teeth, six to eight implants can be placed to support your replacement teeth.
- All-on-4® treatment concept. This particular treatment option is used when you lack sufficient jawbone for a traditional implant supported a denture. Your false teeth are supported by only four implants.
GETTING YOUR TEETH RIGHT AWAY
Typically, following your implant surgery, you are provided with a set of temporary teeth to use while you heal. You could be with these temporary teeth for several weeks to several months during this time. Then, after you have healed, abutments are placed on the implants, and impressions were taken. Your replacement teeth were created off-site, and it could take up to two weeks before your permanent teeth were ready, meaning you still had your temporary teeth, even though you had fully healed.
Same day implants allow you to walk out with your permanent, fully-functional, replacement teeth the same day your implants are placed. Technology has provided us the ability to create your teeth before your surgery, rather than after. This is done with the help of the ICAT scanner, which produces a 3-dimensional model of your mouth, with precise 1:1 measurements. The image allows us not only to plan your surgery but design your implant.
After the implant is designed, it moves on to fabrication. CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) technology makes this possible. The information for your replacement teeth is sent to a milling machine, where the teeth are then created. They are ready for you when you come in for surgery. Once your procedure is complete, the teeth are screwed into place.
BENEFITS OF SAME DAY IMPLANTS
Same day implants provide you with the same benefits as any other type of implant. They are a permanent solution to tooth loss, restoring all functions of your teeth, and providing you with a beautiful, natural smile. The implants are more comfortable than dentures and are much easier to care for. They also help to keep your jawbone strong and healthy. Same day implants, however, have the added benefit of allowing you to leave the office with your permanent, fully-functional replacement teeth. This results in less dental visits, and you can completely bypass the need for temporary restorations.
