Tooth loss is a big deal. For several decades, dentures have been the go-to solution for missing teeth. However, despite the developments made on dentures in recent years, many patients still find them to be cumbersome and their care time-consuming. In recent years, dental implants have quickly taken over as one of the most popular options for tooth replacement. Moreover, with All-on-4® dental implants, more patients can enjoy the benefits that implants have to offer.

Dental implants are a vast improvement over traditional dentures. Small titanium rods are surgically inserted into your jawbone. They rely on osseointegration or the fusion of your jawbone to the implants for success. If osseointegration is successful, the implants imitate the job of your natural tooth roots, holding your replacement crowns securely in place.

Implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth. When you are missing an entire arch of teeth, an implant-supported bridge is typically supported by 6 to 8 dental implants. However, for the implants to fuse properly, you must first have sufficient bone mass. Without it, osseointegration will be incomplete (or not happen at all), resulting in implant failure. Even one failed implant can put your entire restoration at risk.

It used to be that if you lacked sufficient bone mass in your jaw, you couldn’t get dental implants, and were relegated to dentures unless you first underwent a bone graft procedure. The All-on-4® treatment concept is designed to provide those who were once ineligible for implants a chance to enjoy the many benefits that they have to offer. Instead of 6 to 8 implants, your implant-supported bridge is held securely in place by only four implants.

You may be wondering how fewer implants provide more stability. The stability of the All-on-4® treatment concept relies less on the number of implants and more on the strategic placement of the implants used. Two implants are placed in the front of your jaw, where there is naturally more bone mass. The other two implants are placed toward the back of the jaw, one on each side. These implants are inserted at a 45-degree angle, maximizing contact with the jawbone (for maximum stability) without compromising the sinus cavities.

The procedure for All-on-4® implants is fairly similar to the procedure used for traditional dental implants. First, we have a consultation with you, examining your mouth and taking digital images to ensure that the procedure is right for you. On the day of your surgery, a local anesthetic, along with any dental sedation (if needed), are administered. Incisions are then made in the gum tissue, exposing the jawbone. We drill into your bone and place the implants. Your gums are stitched closed around the implants, leaving a small amount exposed above the tissue.

While you heal, a timeframe that can last several weeks to a few months, we will monitor the progress of your jawbone. We will provide you with temporary teeth while you heal. Once healing is complete, abutments are placed on the implants and impressions taken, which are used to design and fabricate your replacement teeth. When they are ready, we screw them into place, leaving you with a permanent, beautiful, smile.

The All-on-4® treatment concept has many benefits:

  • You require less implants, so less surgery is needed.
  • With less surgery, the length of your recovery is shortened.
  • You avoid the need for a bone graft.
  • You get to enjoy the many benefits that dental implants have to offer.
