Dental Veneers

Your teeth are essential for biting and chewing your food. They help you to speak properly, allowing you to form certain sounds and words. They also provide you with a beautiful smile. When your teeth have even minor imperfections, your smile is diminished. At National Dental East Meadow, we offer veneers to help fix minor imperfections and restore the beauty to your smile.

What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are designed to cover the front portions of your teeth, masking a variety of different minor imperfections. They are thin, shell-like restorations, only requiring a small amount of enamel to be removed. By removing the enamel, it ensures that the veneers fit within the rest of your smile.

There are two different materials that are used to create veneers - composite resin and porcelain. At National Dental, we use porcelain veneers. Porcelain is stronger than composite resin. It is also able to better mimic the qualities of your natural teeth. Your veneers can be stained and finished to perfectly match the color of your teeth, and the material similarly reflects the light as your natural enamel.

What Do Veneers Fix?

Veneers are used to fix multiple minor imperfections in your teeth:
•  Small chips and cracks in your tooth's enamel.
•  Gaps between your teeth.
•  Minor overlapping that does not affect your oral health.
•  Misshapen teeth.
•  Teeth that are small or uneven.
•  Discoloration that cannot be fixed with whitening.

Procedure for Placing Veneers

The process for veneers typically takes two visits. During the first visit, your tooth is prepared. This involves the trimming, or removal, of a small amount of the enamel from the front portions of the affected teeth. By doing this, we create the space necessary for your new restorations to fit in naturally, and beautifully, with the rest of your teeth.

After the enamel is removed, we then take an impression of your mouth. The impression allows for the design and creation of your customized veneer. There is usually no need for temporary veneers while waiting for your permanent restoration, although one may be provided for aesthetics.

Once your final veneers are ready, we will check the veneer first for fit and coloration. Once everything looks good, we then move on to bonding your veneers to your teeth. This process involves the use of a lightly acidic gel on your teeth, which creates a rough texture. The texture allows the cement to better bond your veneers to your teeth. Once set, you are left with a beautiful smile that everyone is sure to take notice of.

Taking Care of Your Veneers

Taking care of your veneers is no different from taking care of the rest of your teeth. They should be brushed and flossed daily to help prevent the buildup of plaque and bacteria (which could otherwise lead to gum disease). You should avoid biting down on anything hard. Porcelain can withstand normal biting and chewing forces, but it can chip or fracture under too much pressure. Finally, it is important that you maintain regular dental visits. When we examine your teeth, we will also check your veneers, to make sure that they are in good condition. Properly cared for, your dental veneers can last 20 years or more.
