Visually examining your teeth and gums (and the other visible tissues within your mouth) is an important aspect of both preventative maintenance and diagnosing oral health issues such as gum disease. However, even with the traditional handheld metal mirror, we can only see so much. Technological developments in the dental field have improved upon the old mirrors. At National Dental East Meadow, we make use of the intraoral camera.
Getting a Closer Look Inside Your MouthYou are probably accustomed to seeing a tray of metal tools sitting beside the dentist’s chair when you sit down. Included in these metal tools, there used to be a small, hand-held mirror. At National Dental, this small mirror has been replaced by the intraoral camera. Approximately the size of a large pen, the intraoral camera is attached to a computer. It captures real time images, which are displayed on a monitor. The camera is designed to provide us with an in-depth look at the structures of your mouth so that we can spot even the smallest trouble spots and make an accurate diagnosis.
Better Views of Suspect AreasAlong with capturing real time images, the intraoral camera can also take stills. This allows us to spend more time examining a suspect area without the need for holding the camera in your mouth the entire time. We can zoom in on anything we find suspicious, and enhance the image for a clearer picture. The images can be displayed in color, black and white, or in the negative. All of these features provide us with the ability to spot even the smallest issues. We can then make a treatment plan that solves the issue before it becomes more serious.
You Get a Look Inside Your MouthIn the past, you would sit in the dentist’s chair while we performed our exam. We would explain to you what we saw. However, without the ability to see what we were talking about, it could be hard to understand. You might not think the issue that serious, or you might not believe us at all. With the intraoral camera, you can see the monitor, and everything that is happening inside your mouth. This allows you to get a better understanding of your diagnosis and the treatment plan that is suggested.
Storing Your Images to Your Digital FileEverything is digital these days. This includes your file. Instead of the old paper files, which could become bulky and disorganized over time, your information is stored in a computer file. The images we take with the intraoral camera can also be stored in this file. When we need to compare old images to new ones, we can easily access the older images and compare the two side by side to note even the smallest changes.
Helping to Ease Your AnxietyMany times, anxiety about coming in for an exam can stem from the fact that you have no idea what is happening as we look inside your mouth. Because the intraoral camera shows you everything that we are doing, your fears and anxieties can be alleviated, and you can relax during your appointment.
Thanks to the intraoral camera, our ability to diagnose and treat your oral issues are vastly improved. For more information on how you can benefit from the use of this revolutionary new camera, contact National Dental East Meadow today at (516) 962-2292!
