IV Sedation

IV oral sedation at National Dental East MeadowWhile brushing and flossing your teeth at home every day are essential elements in maintaining your oral health, they are only part of a larger equation. Along with brushing and flossing, regular dental visits are just as important. Moreover, should something happen to your mouth, whether it’s gum disease, or an injury, seeking dental treatment is crucial. However, for many patients, going to the dentist, even for something as simple as a cleaning and exam, can induce paralyzing anxiety. At National Dental East Meadow, we offer oral and IV sedation to help you remain relaxed and calm while you get the oral care treatment you need.

Calm Your Nerves

Having anxiety, or even fear, over going to the dentist is not an uncommon problem. Many times, these feelings are a result of having a bad dental experience in the past. They may also be out of fear of the unknown (having no control over what’s happening). Whatever the reasons for your anxiety, when it keeps you from getting necessary dental treatment, it can be detrimental to your oral health. Sedation helps to calm your nerves and ease your fears while you undergo your dental procedure, whether it's a simple cleaning and exam, or surgery. Other reasons you may choose dental sedation:
•  You have trouble sitting still.
•  Your pain threshold is low.
•  You have extremely sensitive teeth.
•  Your gag reflex is exceptionally bad.
•  You need a substantial amount of work done, or your procedure will take a while.

IV Sedation

IV sedation, like oral sedation, is a form of moderate, “conscious,” sedation. However, rather than taking the medication orally before your procedure, it is administered directly into your veins through the use of a needle. The medication goes to work almost immediately. IV sedation is MD supervised and can be adjusted based on your specific needs.

Before your procedure, it is important that you don’t have anything to eat or drink (including water) for at least 6 to 8 hours before your appointment. When you sit down for your procedure, we will insert a needle either into the back of your hand or your forearm. The needle is then attached to the IV fluid. When we are ready to begin, the medication is administered. Once your procedure is complete, the medication is shut off, and the needle removed. Much like with oral sedation, the effects can linger for up to several hours after your procedure, so you will need to have someone with you who can drive you home.

What Benefits Does Sedation Have to Offer?

Sedation offers several benefits:
•  Sedation is a safe way to help you relax.
•  You can get the dental work done that you need.
•  You will see an improvement in your oral health.
