Digital Radiography

Radiography at National Dental East MeadowTo provide you with the best possible oral health care, being able to monitor all structures of your mouth, both visible and invisible, is essential. X-rays allow the invisible to be seen, showing areas between your teeth, and everything below your gums. In the past, X-rays have been performed with technology that relies on radiation. At National Dental East Meadow, we take advantage of the most up to date technological developments, including digital radiography.

Digital X-Rays

Digital X-rays are images taken of the hidden structures of your mouth (between your teeth, the roots of your teeth, the jawbone) that allow us to assess your oral condition and check for abnormalities (tumors, abscesses, impacted teeth, bone loss). Instead of radiation, digital X-rays rely on electronic technology. The sensor that is placed in your mouth to capture images is hooked up to a computer. Within seconds of taking the images, they show up on the computer monitor. With traditional X-rays, we would have to leave the room and take time to develop the images in a separate location, wasting valuable time that could have been spent with you. Digital X-rays eliminate the need to leave the room, and your entire appointment can be spent with you, explaining what we have found in the images and answering any questions you might have. Moreover, because digital X-rays rely on electronic technology rather than radiation, your exposure to radiation is reduced up to 95%!

Detecting Cavities

When tooth decay first sets in, it is barely noticeable. Moreover, if it is between the teeth, you might not notice anything until you started to experience tooth pain, and by then the damage is much greater. With the features of digital X-rays, such as zooming in and enhancing specific portions of the image, or displaying the images in color, black and white, or negative, our ability to detect cavities and treat cavities earlier is greatly improved.

Improved Preventative Care

Digital X-rays allow us to provide you with the best possible preventative care. Once the images have shown up on the computer monitor (seconds following the X-ray itself), we can begin an immediate investigation. If anything looks suspicious, we can easily zoom in on the area, and enhance it to make it clearer. With these abilities, we can better spot issues in their earliest forms, and take the necessary measures to treat them. By treating early, you are spared from potentially serious pain, as well as the need for more invasive treatments.

Monitoring the Health of your Jawbone

Gum disease is a serious oral health condition that has devastating effects on your gums, your teeth, and your jawbone. Once bacteria get below the gum line, they begin attacking your jawbone and the periodontal ligaments that hold your teeth in place. As your jaw is attacked, the bone begins to weaken and resorb. With digital X-rays, we can easily monitor bone loss. We can pull up older images and set them side by side your new ones, or even place one over the other to note even the smallest changes.

More Effective Treatments

Because digital X-rays provide us with a much better picture of what is happening inside your mouth, we are better able to create a treatment plan for you that will provide the results you want and need. With a more accurate, personalized treatment plan, your oral health is greatly improved.

Digital radiography has afforded us the ability to optimize your oral health care. And software updates allow us to stay as up to date with our technology as possible. For more information on digital radiography, contact National Dental East Meadow today at (516) 962-2292.
